About the Residency

The Morgan Bay Zendo is a 501( c)( 3) nonprofit. Formerly known as Moonspring Hermitage, it was founded by Walter Nowick in 1971 as a Zen meditation center. When he stopped teaching in 1985, the center was renamed and reincorporated as the Morgan Bay Zendo to offer an opportunity for people to practice Buddhist meditation whatever their background or faith may be. The Zendo offers weekly meditation periods, retreats, and other events. There are cabins and an apartment available for retreatants.

Morgan Bay Zendo Residency – Description & Application Process

The Morgan Bay Zendo Residency is a seasonal residency that provides an opportunity for simple living in a contemplative and inspiring setting. In addition to getting to know the regular practitioners at the Morgan Bay Zendo, the resident may meet travelers from all over the world. Residents are invited to participate in retreats and other events.

Residents live in a wood-heated cabin with a gas light from May through October. They have use of the meditation hall, the grounds, and the kitchen facilities. A refrigerator is available and the kitchen is fully equipped for vegetarian meal preparation. Space in an organic garden plot adjacent to the cabin is available for planting.

The surrounding area includes several hundred acres of conservation land and a saltwater bay a short walk away. Acadia National Park is across two bays and about 45 minutes away by car. Several miles of walking trails and good places to swim in the ocean are nearby. The area is also a good place to bicycle. The charming village of East Blue Hill is four miles away and the shopping and cultural centers of Blue Hill and Ellsworth are a 15 minute drive away. A co-op is located in Blue Hill and a natural food store is in Ellsworth. Both towns have active libraries.

A Morgan Bay Zendo Board Member will be your contact person for support and supervision.

Responsibilities are two-fold:
  • 8 hours/week daily cleaning of common areas (kitchen, bathroom, toilets, showers) and weekly grounds work (primarily mowing and trimming).
  • Availability as needed for cabin and apartment housekeeping as well as greeting and orienting Airbnb guests. Resident will receive compensation for each new arrival. The Morgan Bay Zendo anticipates offering two Airbnb listings with a two-night minimum stay.
